Diamond Open Access

The last type is Diamond Open Access, in which both readers and authors are not charged for access or publication – the publishing process is financed in a different way. In March 2022, Science Europe, cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) presented the “Action Plan for Diamond Open Access”, which aims to develop and expand an open and sustainable community-driven scholarly communication ecosystem.

According to a March 2021 overview study – OA Diamond Journals Study prepared for cOAlition S and Science Europe, the number of Diamond OA journals is relatively high (about 29,000), but only one third of them are registered in the Database of Open Access Journals – DOAJ. The Diamond OA journal sector is then significantly diverse in terms of region (45% Europe, 25% Latin America, 16% Asia, 5% USA/Canada) and scientific discipline (60% HSS, 22% science, 17% medicine), according to the study.
