Open Access week and services of Open Science at Library CAS
Next week, 21-27 October 2024, the annual international Open Access week will be launched to promote Open Access (OA) to scientific research results.
This year’s theme is “Put Community over Commercialisation” and will focus on prioritising OA approaches in scientific research. The event serves to inspire and educate the wider public and to make OA approaches the norm in science and research.
This event is celebrated by individuals, institutions and organizations around the world. With this year’s increase in staff capacity in the Open Science Division of the Academy of Sciences Library (thanks to participation in the National Repository Platform project ), we have the opportunity to further expand our services.
Our Library has been providing access to the CAS FAIR Wizard, an online service for easy creation of a Data Management Plan/DMP, for some time. This year we plan to further develop support through this tool. In the near future, we will therefore be introducing basic templates suitable for different scientific fields – humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. In addition, regular trainings and workshops for the creation of DMPs in this tool are planned.
The library is also trying to spread awareness about Transformation Agreements and related OA publishing opportunities. Therefore, at the invitation of the CAS Office, in May we participated in the thematic “Seminar on Open Access and Transformation Contracts” for the management of departments, where, in cooperation with the CzechELib National Centre, we presented appropriate steps to facilitate open publishing for authors. The CzechELib National Centre concluded 14 contracts, saving the participating institutions almost CZK 100 million last year. The institutions in the consortia include also institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and now is also a good time to join new consortia for the following period.
The AS Journals platform, operated by the Library of the Academy of Sciences, which makes it easier for journal editors to publish in the form of OA, is relevant for institutions acting as publishers of journals. This possibility has already been used by 15 journals published by departments of the CAS.
Since January 2024, KNAV has been a member of the national ORCID consortium on behalf of the CAS. Membership is intended to make it easier for authors from the CAS to manage their ORCID accounts. KNAV will coordinate the management of the services offered and provide support to the CAS Institutes. Among the services offered, which will be available to CAS institutions, is for example the automated management of CAS authors’ affiliations in ORCID accounts.
