Czech and Slovak Citizen Science Platform

Establishment of the Czech and Slovak Citizen Science Platform and Signing of the Memorandum

When: November 13, 2025, 10:00–12:00
Where: Arnold Villa, Brno

On Thursday, November 13, a ceremonial signing of the memorandum establishing the Czech and Slovak Citizen Science Platform will take place in Brno. This step marks an important milestone in the cooperation between Czech and Slovak institutions in the field of citizen science. The goal of the Platform is to strengthen the connection between academia, research institutions, and the general public, creating a space for sharing experiences, inspiration, and best practices.

The memorandum, initiated by the Institute of Geonics of the Czech Academy of Sciences with the support of the European Citizen Science project, establishes a framework for voluntary collaboration based on the principles of inclusion, knowledge sharing, and transparency.

The ceremonial meeting will include presentations by representatives of participating institutions, followed by a discussion and informal networking. Representatives of ECSA (European Citizen Science Association) will also join remotely.

More information about this meeting, including a registration link, can be found here (only in Czech).

Citizen science

Citizen science is an approach to scientific research that actively involves members of the public in the scientific process. This participation can take place at various levels — from data collection to data processing and analysis, or even the creation of research outputs. Citizen science opens new possibilities for scientific work, enabling research that would be too demanding or impossible without public involvement. At the same time, it offers the public the opportunity to take part in research, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and fostering stronger connections between researchers and society.

At the European level, the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) has defined Ten Principles of Citizen Science, which outline the fundamental rules and ethical standards that citizen science projects should follow.

In the Czech Republic, the platform https://www.citizenscience.cz/ provides information about ongoing projects, opportunities for participation, educational resources, and news. Many citizen science projects are also conducted at institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, with details about these projects and participation opportunities available on the Academy’s website.
