First Meeting of the Diamond Open Access Policy Forum
When: October 29, 2025, 16:00–17:30 CET
Where: online
At the end of October, the first meeting of the Diamond Open Access Policy Forum will bring together policymakers and research funders from Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The Forum is part of the ALMASI project, which aims to foster the development of a fair, community-led, and non-commercial publishing ecosystem.
The Diamond Open Access model is based on the idea that scholarly publications should be accessible to everyone—without fees for either authors or readers. Publishing costs are covered through institutional or grant support, enabling a more equitable and open system of scholarly communication. Finding effective and sustainable ways to fund this model will be one of the main topics discussed at the Forum.
The programme includes:
- an overview of the current state of non-profit scholarly publishing in Africa, Europe, and Latin America,
- a panel discussion with policymakers and institutional representatives on successful approaches to funding non-profit publishing,
- a joint discussion on how the Forum can best support regional priorities and cooperation across continents.
The meeting will provide a space for sharing experiences and discussing the needs and challenges of non-profit scholarly publishing. It will bring together representatives of international, national, and local institutions, including organisations supporting development initiatives worldwide. The overall goal of the Forum is to jointly formulate policy recommendations and funding models that can be applied in various regional contexts.
