CoARA – second round of Cascade Funding

When: mid February 2025

About CoARA

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is a collective of organizations working to reform the methods and processes of research assessment, researchers and research organizations. Current research assessment methods rely heavily on publication-based indicators (citation counts) and often fail to recognize the wide range of contributions made by researchers. CoARA’s mission is therefore to enable a systemic reform of research evaluation within a defined timeframe based on a common set of principles and commitments. Through collaborative action, knowledge exchange and mutual learning, CoARA aims to support all members in adopting and improving more inclusive and effective evaluation practices.

Second round of funding

The “Cascade Funding” call for funding generally aims to foster institutional change and focus on pilot initiatives and knowledge exchange. It also encourages research organisations to explore and test what will work effectively ‘in real life’. Funding for projects is suitable for academies, national/regional bodies or agencies, public or private research funding organisations, research centres, research infrastructures, universities, or other relevant non-profit organisations conducting some form of research evaluation.

The second call for ‘Cascade Funding’ projects will be open for a minimum of 60 days and will cover three types of projects, as in the first call:

  • Team Projects – facilitate the transfer and adaptation of experience and practices from a more advanced/experienced organization to one or more less experienced organizations.
  • Institutional pilot projects – offer institutions the opportunity to experiment and evaluate new approaches, practices, frameworks and evaluation tools in the context of a clearly defined initiative.
  • Institutional change projects – provide a means to accelerate change in an organization’s practices and processes.

On January 30, 2025, an online information session was held. To keep up with announcements and other news about “Cascade funding” follow the CoARA News blog, the CoARA newsletter and LinkedIn.
