Webinar: PIDs for Software

30. June; 13:00 - 15:30

When: June 30, 2025, 13:00 – 15:30 CEST
Where: online

As research increasingly relies on software, ensuring its long-term accessibility, transparency, and citation is essential. Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are key to making software findable, citable, and reusable – supporting the FAIR principles and enabling reproducible science.

To explore this topic, PID Network Germany is hosting a webinar “PIDs for Software”. This project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), aims to connect experts from the fields of science and culture, support the standardization and broader adoption of PIDs, and contribute to the development of a national PID strategy for Germany.

The event will present practical tools, standards, and infrastructures that support the sustainable publication and referencing of research software. Participants will learn about the HERMES publication system, which facilitates the structured documentation and citation of software, and Software Hash Identifiers (SWHIDs), enabling precise and permanent referencing of code across its development lifecycle. SWHIDs are now recognized as an international standard (ISO/IEC 18670:2025), highlighting their value for reproducibility and traceability in science.

The seminar will also include perspectives from DataCite, which supports the citation of software through its metadata schema, and from the German National Library (GND), which is exploring how authority data can support the discoverability and classification of software-related entities. The program includes not only expert presentations but also an interactive session and a concluding discussion, and is intended for anyone interested in research software, metadata, and open science infrastructure.
