DEST Training: Annotating and Sharing Biodiversity Data – In-Person Sessions
When: October 15, 2025 (online) + November 10–11, 2025 (in person)
Where: online / Freie Universität Berlin, Altensteinstr. 2 (Villa Engler), Berlin, Germany
The Distributed European School of Taxonomy (DEST) is organizing a training focused on annotating and sharing biodiversity data. DEST is part of the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF), a network of institutions that care for biological and geological collections. The training will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of how biodiversity data are managed and shared within the scientific community.
The online theoretical introduction on October 15, 2025, will give an overview of current biodiversity literature and highlight the shift towards open access to taxonomic data, including the new opportunities this trend brings. This will be followed by two days of hands-on, in-person training on November 10–11, 2025, at Freie Universität Berlin, where participants will learn practical workflows for structuring, annotating, and sharing biodiversity information extracted from scientific publications. They will also explore how to access existing data and reuse it for their own research.
Upon completing the training, participants will be equipped with the skills needed to increase the accessibility and reusability of biodiversity information, thereby supporting more effective data sharing among researchers.
Registration is open until September 30, 2025 here. The training is free of charge, though participants are responsible for their own expenses.
