In the summer semester 2026, the Faculty of Arts of Charles University offers the course Basics of Digital Humanities (Základy digital humanities) as a part of lifelong learning. The course focuses on developing competencies in the field of digital humanities and provides an introductory overview of the discipline, suitable also for beginners. It is practice-oriented, with relevance to professions in non-teaching pedagogy as well as media and communication studies, but it is intended for all professions involving work with digital texts, text digitisation, analysis, and processing.
Participants will be introduced to working with digital technologies, including web data collection and processing; XML (including the ALTO, TEI, XPath, XSLT, and XQuery standards); databases and SQL queries; data analysis in Power BI; data linking in Keboola; accessible API design; machine learning and AI (large language models); and data storage and dissemination (including licensing) in repositories.
The course is taught in Czech.
The course runs from 16 February to 22 May, once a week on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Upon completion, participants will receive a micro-certificate. The course fee is 12 300 CZK.
