9th Open Science Retreat: Diamond Open Access
When: September 23–24, 2025, 16:00–18:00
Where: online
On September 23 and 24, 2025, from 16:00 to 18:00, the 9th Open Science Retreat will take place online, this time under the theme “Diamond OA: Utopian Dream or the Only Fair Future?”. Diamond Open Access (Diamond OA) is a model of scholarly publishing free of charges, community-driven, and offering an open alternative to traditional publishing models. Participants will have the opportunity to explore whether Diamond OA truly delivers equitable access to scientific knowledge or whether it remains more of an idealistic vision. The event will feature inspiring talks from international experts, discussions on funding models, and practical examples of successful initiatives.
The program combines expert presentations with small group discussions and plenary sessions. Day one will provide an overview of the benefits and challenges of Diamond OA, along with opportunities for participants to share their experiences. Day two will continue with discussions, concluding in a final plenary debate that will summarize the key insights and offer perspectives on the future of Diamond OA and open science. The program will also include debates on the role of artificial intelligence and the conditions that can foster the development of this publishing model.
The retreat is open to anyone interested in open science and equitable access to scholarly publications – from researchers and librarians to policymakers. Overviews of previous retreats for inspiration are available here.
The event is organized by ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (Germany), which has a long-standing commitment to promoting open science. Beyond its focus on economics, ZBW works to ensure broad access to publications and data, actively contributing to the advancement of open science at both the national and international level.
Registration is open until September 2, 2025. More information about the event is available here.
